With 2013’s unofficial mantra of “More is More”, we simpler folk are staging a design revolt by embracing the clean and clutter-free look of classic Scandinavian décor. Simple Scandinavian design combines clean lines, graphic patterns, high contrast tones and finishes, and carefully considered injections of warm, woodsy elements. The look has a lot in common with classic Japanese design, which expertly marries the principles of minimalism with the wit and wisdom of traditional folklore. It’s no wonder, then, that today’s Simple Scandi is a perfect hybrid of the two, meaning it’s not unusual to see a Japanese scroll displayed alongside a Dala horse or two.
